Required Placement Testing
You will be required to take the placement exam if you meet either of the following criteria. You must take the exam before you can register for classes.
- You have a Math ACT score of 25 or above.
- You do not have an ACT or SAT score on file at USD
A valid photo ID is required when taking a Placement Exam. Please visit the ACT website for information on acceptable forms of a valid ID.

Optional Placement Testing
Based on your math ACT subscores, you will be placed in one of the following classes. You may challenge this automatic class assignment by opting to take the placement exams. A fee will be charged for taking the exam.
- Math 095 (for math ACT subscores of 19 or lower)
Note: Math 095 does NOT count as credit toward graduation nor does it count as credit towards the mathematics portion of the required general education curriculum. However, it will count toward the necessary credits to be considered as a full-time student.
Course description: Pre-College Algebra (3 Credits). This course prepares students for college level mathematics. Topics include basic properties of real numbers, exponents & radicals, rectangular coordinate geometry, solutions to linear and quadratic equations, systems of equations, inequalities, polynomials, factoring, rational expressions and equations, radical expressions and equations.
- Math 102 (for math ACT subscore of 20 – 24)
Note: Math 102 will count as credit toward graduation as well as credit towards the mathematics portion of the required general education curriculum.
Course description: College Algebra (3 Credits). Set concepts, properties of real numbers, solutions of equations and inequalities, algebraic simplification of expressions, factoring, systems of equations, exponents, radicals and applications.
