Beyond the Classroom
- The department hosts around 15 visiting artists each year, providing master classes, critiques, gallery shows, and more.
- Student trips to galleries, shows and art-related events expose students to art in a variety of settings.
- The U's annual juried art show, the Stillwell Student Awards Exhibition, allows opportunities for students to display their own work.
- The Art History program offers students annual study abroad classes.
- The department is host to the nationally known Frogman's Print and Paper Workshops each summer.
- The University Art Galleries provide educational art exhibitions and study collections through over 15 annual exhibits in the Main Gallery, the Oscar Howe Art Gallery and open storage of alumni works in offices across campus.
Just the Facts
- The U's Department of Art is the only art program accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art & Design in the state and is the only visual arts school in the state to offer the B.F.A. and M.F.A. degrees.
- The art department is part of the College of Fine Arts, housed in the 104,000 square foot, state-of-the-art Warren M. Lee Center for the Fine Arts.
- Art students benefit from the creative community that also includes students of music and theatre. Art facilities include 11 studios equipped for drawing, traditional and digital photography, bronze casting, metal working, printmaking, painting, multiple ceramic kilns, art classes and galleries.
- An art history slide library and 9,000-volume art library are housed in the Warren M. Lee Center with a Mac computer lab equipped with wireless capabilities, a 42" digital ink jet printer and current computer industry standard programs.
